Filtration, Diffusion, and Molecular Sieving through Porous Cellulose Membranes

1. A study has been made of the diffusion and filtration of a graded series of molecules (including tritium-labelled water, urea, glucose, antipyrine, sucrose, raffinose, and hemoglobin) in aqueous solution through porous cellulose membranes of three degrees of porosity. 2. Experimental results were in close agreement with predictions based on the membrane pore theory of Pappenheimer et al. (1,...

Precise and ultrafast molecular sieving through graphene oxide membranes.

Graphene-based materials can have well-defined nanometer pores and can exhibit low frictional water flow inside them, making their properties of interest for filtration and separation. We investigate permeation through micrometer-thick laminates prepared by means of vacuum filtration of graphene oxide suspensions. The laminates are vacuum-tight in the dry state but, if immersed in water, act as...

Filtration, Diffusion and Molecular Sieving Through Peripheral Capillary Membranes

T HE PENETRATION of capillary walls by water and dissolved substances appears to take place solely by processes which require no energy transformations on the part of the capillary endothelial cells. The rate of net fluid movement across the capillary wall has been shown to be simply proportional to the difference between hydrostatic and osmotic forces acting across the capillary membranes (I, ...

An exceptional kinetic quantum sieving separation effect of hydrogen isotopes on commercially available carbon molecular sieves.

The quantum sieving effect of H2/D2 at 77 K on commercially available carbon molecular sieves (1.5GN-H and 3KT-172) was studied. An exceptional reverse kinetic quantum effect is observed on 1.5GN-H where D2 diffuses much faster than H2 with a ratio of up to 5.83 at low pressure, and the difference is still very evident even as the pressure increases up to 1 bar. D2 also diffuses faster than H2 ...
